It's used to keep scratches down from dirt and other debris while on the road. The idea is that on a flatter surface, a small rock or piece of dirt will slide and scratch, and with the orange peel it will bounce off the craters causing less harm to the clear coat!A smoother surface will always look better and can usually be cut/buffed/polished nicely. Newer cars usually use less paint now to cut down on cost and keep up with EPA requirements! Since they use less paint they usually cant be detailed as aggressively as a heavier paint so the orange peel also helps them stay just within warranty since it tends to take less damage!
